Nov. 18 – Society of Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators

November 18th at 2 p.m I’ll be giving a talk to the Society of Children’s Book Authors and Illustrators, meeting in Corte Madera at Book Passage. Here’s the blurb:

Debra Goelz, author of a new YA fantasy published by Hachette Audio, MERMAIDS AND THE VAMPIRES WHO LOVE THEM, introduces everyone to Wattpad, an online and app-based platform that blends social media and storytelling.

Sometimes called the “YouTube” of writing, Wattpad connects readers and writers all over the planet. Wattpad is changing the world of publishing by giving authors the opportunity to reach a readership and develop a platform. Margaret Atwood, an early proponent of Wattpad says, “Wattpad opens the doors and enlarges the view in places where the doors are closed and the view is restricted. And somewhere out there in Wattpadland, a new generation is testing its wings.” Debra is a Wattpad Star whose work became an almost instant sensation with over 9.3 million reads on her stories to date.

Debra has published two short stories in anthologies with Simon & Schuster in addition to the audiobook, which began its life as a serial posted on Wattpad. She will discuss the trajectory of taking a story from an on-line platform to traditional publication.
